This study investigates the different aspects and terminology behind the meaning of the word “home“. It introduces us to its basic foundations, in a literal sense: home being our safe haven. In the dictionary “home” translates as a means to cover, to envelope, to protect, to veil our experiences and memories. What we connect with “home” is something very deep and personal. Something which is connected to our very early childhood and which forms a big part of our personality. It’s a very intimate thought or feeling —our roots — something we carry around all the time, something that we are. Our home also gives us protection and strength even though if we don’t invoke ourselves permanently to it. In this study I also want to look at its opposites, or the effects of its opposites: homesickness, and exile. As well as looking at its literal meanings I want to explore its meaning in terms of visual representation as opposed to feelings. In this aspect I will describe the similarities between “home” as a feeling or experience and “home” as a fashion statement or a visual identity. To illustrate the similarities between the literal meaning of the word “home” and its translation into fashion, I will look at the most basic of fashion garments: the T-shirt, and the new innovative approaches to the design of this garment. This work is an attempt to show the possibilities of creativ fashion design. Besides other topics this study deals with innovation strategies concerning home and identity. I will conclude to show how fashion, like the literal meaning of “home” has been used to create a sense of our own identity in how others view us, or our own cover when we choose to hide away. My aim in this study is to show the similarities between “home” and “fashion”.
